Abbeyfield Society
The Abbeyfield Society was founded in 1956 by Richard CarrGomm to provide companionship for elderly people in comfortable family sized houses, each with a resident House Manager and a voluntary Committee. There are now over 500 Societies throughout the United Kingdom with more than 800 houses providing accommodation for around 8,500 residents.
Abbeyfield member Societies are guided by the following shared beliefs:
- Older people have an important role to play amongst their families, friends and in the community
- Overcoming loneliness and insecurity can make all the difference to an older person's well being and quality of life
- Local people have an essential part to play in helping older people in their community
